Description

Impressive Stone Front Colonial   The timeless appeal of Colonial architecture distinguishes a fieldstone-accented residence gracefully sited on about an acre of open, level and treed property in Basking Ridge. Thoughtfully updated and filled with natural light, this beautifully updated Colonial offers four bedrooms, two-and-one-half baths and an attached two-car garage. A paved drive leads to the landscaped brick paver walkway and covered front bluestone entrance marked by stately columns. European-style half round rain gutters with decorative exposed brackets build on the extremely clean look set by the classically inspired portico gracing the entrance. James Hardie wide fiber cement board siding and Azek PVC trim enhance the stately exterior.    Interior highlights within an open floor plan of about 2,800 square-feet include gleaming hardwood floors, classic millwork, freshly painted rooms in a neutral color palette, two fireplaces, recessed lighting, a gourmet center island kitchen, luxurious master suite and additional living space in the partially finished lower level.    Of special note is the extensive landscaping installed by the current owners which included clearing out part of the backyard and grading it as well as adding a collection of trees. Represented are blue spruce, giant arborvitae, Canadian hemlock, southern magnolia, weeping cedar and white pine trees. Evergreen shrubs planted include American holly, azaleas, boxwoods, firethorn, Japanese gold dust, mountain laurel and rhododendron. Among the lush ground covers are ajuga, pachysandra and myrtle herb. Mature elm, maple and oak trees invite mid-summer outdoor movies, swaying in a hammock, swinging on a tire swing, or holding a twilight gathering beneath the outdoor string lights. An expansive rear deck overlooks these park-like grounds edged by leafy woodlands.   The elegant point of entry is a two-story foyer featuring ceramic tile floors, dimensional wainscoting and a turned staircase with ornate wrought iron railings. Flanking the foyer are formal living and dining rooms, each fitted with hardwood floors, crown and chair rail moldings and a triple picture window. The spacious living room is enhanced by a raised hearth brick fireplace, while the dining room adjoins an upgraded kitchen for streamlined entertaining.   Details in the superior chef’s kitchen include granite countertops, an extra-long center island breakfast bar with prep sink, hardwood floors, cherry cabinetry, and upper-end stainless steel appliances. Sliding glass doors in the adjacent breakfast room open to the deck for al fresco meals. Continuing the open flow is a family room anchored by a marble surround fireplace. This convivial space also connects to the deck and includes a television, AV equipment and built-in speakers for an optimal media experience. Completing the main floor are a chic powder room and a well-equipped laundry/mud room with newer cabinetry and shelving plus a door to the front yard.   Upstairs, the inviting master suite offers a private bedroom with walk-in closet and a stylishly renovated master bath containing two granite-topped sink vanities and a large tile shower enclosed in clear glass. Three additional bedrooms on this level share another full bath. The lower level includes a finished recreation room designed with laminate wood flooring and recessed lights. A huge, unfinished bonus space could easily be transformed into living area with flexible uses.   State-of-the-art home systems include a Kuna security systems with lights and cameras which has an intercom connected to the user’s phone; Nest and Philips home automation for lights, heat and smoke detection; a backup generator with transfer switch; newer Trane air conditioning condenser and an AC Smith high efficiency water heater. Located on a quiet cul de sac where it is surrounded by nature, this prime Colonial is just minutes from Interstate 287 and the Somerset Hills YMCA. Bernards Twp. (Basking Ridge), NJ real estate market

Basking Ridge in Bernards Township has retained its small-town charm for over 200 years. Most of the shops, restaurants, and services along tree-lined South Finley Avenue are located in historic 19th-century houses. In fact, the downtown area has so much history that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.

Bernards Township was originally formed by Royal Charter as Bernardston Township. The name Bernards Township was given to the area in 1760 by King George II to honor Sir Francis Bernard, Provincial Governor of New Jersey from 1758 to 1760. It was incorporated as Bernards Township in 1798. Basking Ridge, Liberty Corner, Lyons, and West Millington are located within Bernards Township, while Martinsville is split between Bernards and Bridgewater Townships.

Even though maps indicate that Basking Ridge is a small commercial district in the northeast section of Bernards, about 95% of the township is referred to as Basking Ridge and has a Basking Ridge postal address. The only major parts of Bernards that do not have Basking Ridge addresses are the Veterans Administration Hospital in Lyons and Liberty Corner, a small historic district in the southern portion of the township.

The Bernards Township municipal building on Collyer Lane is housed in a circa 1912 brick Tudor mansion detailed with French pocket doors, maple and mahogany paneling, and marble fireplaces. The house and its 28 acres were sold to the township by John Jacob Astor VI for $140,000 in 1968.
